The Burning Rebellion

In the third century of the War of Heaven, the mortal nations of the Mortal Lands rose up against their divine patrons. Tired of being pawns in a war they did not start, a coalition of human kingdoms, dwarf strongholds, and elven enclaves declared independence from all Twelve Thrones. The rebellion lasted forty years and cost two million mortal lives. It failed militarily — the Thrones crushed the coalition — but succeeded politically. The Armistice that ended the War of Heaven included, at mortal insistence, a clause forbidding the conscription of mortal soldiers into divine conflicts. This was the first time in history that mortals negotiated with gods as equals.
